Sustainable transport solutions provider Scania, jointly with the logistics company Vlantana and natural gas infrastructure developer SG dujos, have presented the first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled truck in Lithuania.

“Scania offers sustainable and innovative solutions for transport, and the new generation CNG R410 truck is one of such examples. It is an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution enabling reduction of COand other emissions by 15% and offering great potential of fuel efficiency as well as the value of the quiet operation, with the dynamic characteristics equivalent to 13-litre diesel. During the CNG field test we are aiming to collect more detailed information and data for alternative fuel solutions”, says Darius Snieška, the director of Scania Lietuva.

The demand for trucks compliant to the highest environmental standards demonstrates substantial growth in the logistics industry as a result of improved infrastructure and good economic viability for hauliers.

Vlantana one of the leaders in the market of logistics in Lithuania will be the first to take advantages of sustainable transport provided by Scania CNG truck. With this field-test, Vlantana is bringing environmentally friendly transport to its local and regional routes.

“Natural gas Scania truck provides a great opportunity to become front runner in sustainable transport and to contribute to our eco-mobility together with improvement of life quality. CNG powered truck will have many further advantages for us, such as empower to smoothly move in restricted and overcrowded traffic areas, possibility to access board ferries, underground parking areas”, says Vladas Stončius, the executive manager of Vlantana.

He believes that besides a chance to drive competitive advantage by reducing environmental footprint and company expenses, the Scania CNG truck should be considered as a great example preparing for the next stage which is liquefied natural gas (LNG) network in Lithuania.

“Positive economic and environmental effect of natural gas-powered trucks suppose be important for more stakeholders because they are capable to contribute to the infrastructure-related decisions. LNG carrier Independence (Lithuania’s floating storage regasification unit) suggests high potential and opportunities in this case. The necessary solutions for development of LNG filling stations network shall be faster as well’, says Executive Director of Vlantana.

While the first LNG station for vehicles in Lithuania is set to be available in 2019, the state already has 9 gas compression stations for CNG trucks. Public filling services are provided in Vilnius, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, and Panevėžys.

CNG station network in the region makes CNG trucks well-suited for these routes. There are more than ten CNG stations in Estonia, several tenths in Finland, Norway and Poland, and hundredths in Sweden. Natural gas infrastructure is highly developed in majority of Western European countries such as Germany, Czech Republic, Italy and others. It shows the high growth potential to operate in relatively close markets.

“The era of natural gas as a vehicle fuel has dawned in Lithuania only this year. The natural gas is becoming a perfect alternative for all transport market operators. And this is not only because of the environmental aspects but the affordable prices as well”, says Virginijus Korsakas, CEO of SG Dujos the leading natural gas infrastructure developer in Lithuania.

“In 2019, we are planning to open at least two CNG stations, and the first in Lithuania LNG station for vehicles. Furthermore, we work on improvement of the payment systems in the gas compression stations which are already operated”, stated V. Korsakas

Currently, the price per cubic meter of CNG in Lithuania reaches 0.82 Euro cents, in comparison with 1.31 Euro per liter of diesel fuel. Completely CNG-fueled Scania truck carrying 40 tons of freight may cover up to 500 kilometers. Such distance is sufficient for the truck use on urban, inter-urban and regional routes.

Both CNG tanks and LNG tanks can be used as a fuel in Scania R410 truck. LNG always provides greater range, as a significantly larger amount of fuel is available.
